Vehicles from a country other than the US or Canada must meet the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards in force on the date it was manufactured. If it does not comply with these regulations, the vehicle cannot be altered and cannot be imported into the country. Exceptions only apply if the vehicle is 15 years or older and, for buses, manufactured before 1 January 1971. Transport Canada deals with the importation of vehicles into Canada from outside the US.

If a vehicle bought outside Canada or the US does meet either the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act or the United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, the owner must produce a statement of compliance from the manufacturer to demonstrate this. As long as the vehicle has not been altered, importation into Canada should be permitted.
