To apply for Canadian citizenship, a person must fulfil a number of criteria:

  • Be over 18 years of age
  • Have permanent resident status
  • Have lived in Canada for three out of the past four years
  • Have adequate knowledge of either English or French (if under the age of 54)
  • Pass a citizenship test (if under the age of 54)

A person cannot become a citizen if they have been convicted of an offence under the Citizenship Act in the last three years or are charged with an offence under the Citizenship Act. Those on parole, probation or in prison also cannot apply. Other conditions apply.
