Holiday Accommodation Options in Montreal

Useful information about where to stay when travelling to, or spending a long weekend or holiday in the Montreal region...

Montreal has a wide range of holiday accommodation, ranging from basic camp sites to international 5 star hotels and resorts. Most types of accommodation can be found on the island of Montreal, or within a short drive of the city.

Tourist accommodation in Québec is classified by the Corporation de l'Industrie Touristique du Québec (CITQ), with a star rating of 1 to 5.

Hotels

Being a major business centre as well as a very popular tourist destination, Montreal is home to a wide variety of hotels. These range from small private hotels with limited facilities, to medium-sized boutique hotels and large fully-serviced luxury hotels with every amenity.

An alternative source for finding a hotel in the Greater Montreal area is the Hotel Association of Greater Montréal.

Many hotels also offer studios and condos. These are more spacious than regular rooms and have a kitchenette and often a small living room.

Bed & Breakfast

A Gîte du passant, or Bed & Breakfast is accommodation in a private residence with a more homely atmosphere than a hotel. The room is rented by the night and includes breakfast. This is a good way to discover the city or the region through the local community.

Youth Hostels

It is not necessary to be young in order to stay in youth hostels and they are ideal for low budget travelling. Different types of rooms are available from shared dormitories to private rooms. Accommodation tends to be basic but is generally clean and comfortable. Hostelling International Canada has affiliated hostels all over the country.

Camping

The main season for camping in Québec is from June to August, although many sites are open from spring through to the autumn. Campgrounds are rated from 0 to 5 stars based on the quality of facilities and activities, in much the same way as hotels are rated.

Most larger camp sites in Québec are designed to cater mainly for motor homes and caravans, some of which can be as big as a passenger coach. These large campgrounds usually have a good range of facilities including power supply, toilet and shower blocks, shops, swimming pool and recreation areas. Most campgrounds have a separate designated area for tents. There are also many smaller sites for those that prefer a more simple style of camping, and these usually have at least toilet and shower facilities.

Sépaq owns and operates a network of outdoor activity and camping sites in Québec, many of which have camping cabins and yurts available to rent.

Cottages and Chalets

Self-catering cottages, or chalets, are very popular in Québec and many people have these as a second or holiday home to take a break from city life. While there are not many of these to rent in the Greater Montreal region, there are many to choose from within one to two hours' drive from the city.

Most rental cottages can be found on specialist websites such as Cottagesrental.com and Cottages Quebec.
