Holiday Accommodation in Canada

Going on vacation in Canada? Information on finding the right place to stay: self-catering, bed and breakfast, hotel or youth hostel, find out more...

With over 35 million visitors a year, Canada has many places for them to stay. There is a vast range of holiday accommodation in Canada ranging from cheap backpackers' accommodation to international five-star hotels.

Hotels and Motels

Canadian hotels and motels range from the luxurious to cheaper options and offer a variety of facilities and services, depending on the class of accommodation. There is no official (government) rating system for accommodation in Canada.

Bed and Breakfasts

Bed and breakfasts offer accommodation in private homes. These do not feature the same facilities and services as hotels and motels, but focus on a more personal experience with hosts that are often knowledgeable about the local area and attractions. Note that not all bed and breakfasts offer elaborate breakfasts; some provide a basket of light morning fare and coffee or tea. Other meals are usually not served.

Camping and Campsites

Camping is very popular in Canada, particularly during the spring and summer months. Tenting sites and recreational vehicle sites are often combined in the same park.

Campsites usually include:

  • Picnic bench
  • Fire pit
  • Communal washing and toilet buildings

Recreational vehicle parks include hook-ups for water and electricity and a variety of other facilities which may include:

  • Sani-dump station (sewer dump)
  • Picnic benches
  • Fire pits
  • Communal washing and toilet buildings
  • Food store
  • Recreational facilities (swimming pool, mini-golf, playground)

Hostels are designed for travellers on a budget and those who seek inexpensive yet secure accommodation in central locations. Canada has hostels that welcome all ages, as well as families.

Hostelling International Canada (HI-Canada) is a member of the global network of Youth Hostel Associations and runs many hostels in the country. Members of HI-Canada or another Youth Hostel Association receive discounted rates at Canadian HI hostels.

Private Vacation Rentals

There are many private apartments and houses available to rent in Canada, usually for longer vacation stays of a week or more. These properties are typically advertised through websites that list a number of properties, searchable by location, size, amenities, child-friendly and other criteria.

Vacation rentals can also be found in the classified sections of local newspapers and under Housing on local online bulletin boards.
